What you say

Almost everything in a Serbian café starts with one word: može. It literally means “it's possible”, and it does the work of please, can I, and I'd like all at once.

What the waiter says

These four lines cover most of what you'll hear. Recognise them and the whole thing stops being frightening.

Words you'll need

Drop any of these into Može… and you have a new sentence.

Practise these

ExerciseOrdering food Eighteen sentences from opening the menu to asking for the bill. ExerciseAt the café Sixteen sentences from sitting down to paying.
