A Serbian butcher's counter is easier than it looks, because the words are built rather than memorised. Learn -etina and most of this page follows on its own.
One ending, every meat
Serbian doesn't have separate words the way English does — no pig and pork, no cow and beef. It takes the animal and adds -etina.
Learn the animals and you get the meats free. It works for creatures nobody eats too, which is why -etina can sound faintly comic — Serbians use it that way on purpose.
Baby beef, young beef, beef
Serbian separates beef by the age of the animal, and the price follows exactly. English doesn't have three words for this, which is why online translations of these three contradict each other. Read the ladder instead of trusting the label:
If you can't remember which is which, look at the price tag. It tells you the order every time.
I had this explained to me properly by one of my own students, who worked in the trade. It is not something you'll find written down correctly in many places.
